Astronomers have announced that asteroid 2025 PN7 is the latest quasi-satellite of Earth — a small rock discovered on 2 August 2025 by the Pan‑STARRS1 telescope at Haleakalā, Hawaiʻi. Though not a true moon like our familiar Moon, 2025 PN7 shares Earth’s orbital period around the Sun in a 1:1 resonance, which makes it appear to escort us in space.
It’s believed to have been co-orbiting with us for ~60 years already and may continue for another ~60 years before drifting away into a different orbital path.
This discovery gives us a fresh perspective on how dynamic and “crowded” our Earth’s neighborhood is — a reminder that even near-space still holds surprises.
