What specifically does SPF mean?

An Argument Resolved… After we were outside in the sun for so long one day… and another got sunburn on a bald head… What really does SPF mean.

Also did you know…

Sun exposure can trigger hyper pigmentation and worsen conditions like melasma and dark spots. Daily sunblock use helps maintain a more even skin tone and prevents flare-ups caused by UV exposure.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It’s a measure of how well a sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays, the type of ultraviolet radiation that causes sunburn and contributes to skin cancer.

How SPF Works:

The SPF number tells you how much longer you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned than if you weren’t wearing sunscreen. For example:

  • SPF 30 means you can be in the sun 30 times longer without burning than you could with no protection (in theory).
  • If your unprotected skin would start to burn in 10 minutes, SPF 30 could extend that to about 300 minutes (10 minutes × 30).

Important Notes:

  • No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays:
    • SPF 15 blocks about 93%
    • SPF 30 blocks about 97%
    • SPF 50 blocks about 98%
  • Reapplication is key—especially after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.
  • SPF only refers to UVB protection. For full protection, look for “broad-spectrum” sunscreens, which also protect against UVA rays (linked to aging and skin cancer).

In short, SPF helps reduce your risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage—but only if used correctly and consistently.
