Random Thoughts…

So I’ve been looking at rings lately because I think it would be cool to start wearing them. I used to play basketball and I still play instruments, so having rings on my fingers has never felt natural. Shout-out to the people who can wear them comfortably—I used to jam my fingers so often that rings were never something I even considered wearing.

About 15 years ago, I was studying the history of wearing rings, and then I just stopped. I guess it never felt like a natural custom for me.

The tradition of marriage rings goes back thousands of years. The earliest known use comes from ancient Egypt, where couples exchanged braided reeds or leather bands as symbols of eternity. Egyptians believed the circle represented endless love, and they placed the ring on the fourth finger of the left hand because they thought a vein—the vena amoris, or “vein of love”—ran directly from that finger to the heart.

The custom later spread to the Greeks, and then to the Romans, who popularized the idea of giving a ring as a sign of commitment and ownership. Roman rings were often made of iron, symbolizing strength and permanence. Over time, more valuable materials like gold became common.

By the Middle Ages, Christian wedding ceremonies included the exchange of rings, and the symbolism shifted toward representing spiritual unity, fidelity, and the binding of two lives together. Designs also evolved—rings with engravings, gemstones, and later diamond engagement rings became widespread.

The modern practice of both partners wearing wedding bands didn’t become common until the 20th century, especially around World War II, when men began wearing rings to feel connected to their spouses while away.

Today, wedding rings carry cultural, emotional, and personal significance, but their core meaning—a continuous circle representing enduring love and commitment—has remained remarkably consistent throughout history.
