Summer Protective Styles for Locs
As summer rolls around, the sun, heat, and humidity can pose a unique set of challenges for those with locs. While locs are a beautiful and low-maintenance style, the warmer months require a bit of extra care to keep them healthy and protected. Thankfully, there are plenty of summer-friendly protective styles that allow you to keep your locs safe from the harsh elements while still looking fabulous.
In this post, I’ll be sharing my favorite summer protective styles for locs, and yes, I’ll be posting some of my own photos to show you how I’m rocking these styles!
1. Loc Updos: Classic and Chic
Updos are always a great way to keep your locs off your neck and out of your face during the hot summer months. Plus, they’re versatile enough to be styled for both casual and formal events. Here are a few updo ideas for your locs:
- High Bun: A simple high bun is a timeless choice that’s perfect for hot summer days. It keeps your locs out of the way while adding a touch of elegance. You can either leave your locs loose for a more relaxed vibe or twist them into a neat bun for a polished look.
- Bantu Knots: These small, coiled buns are a stylish way to keep your locs off your face while adding volume and texture. Not only will they protect your locs from the sun, but you can also rock a cute curly look once you take them down.
- Twist and Pin: For a chic yet practical style, twist sections of your locs and pin them up to create an elegant, tousled updo. This style is great for evening events or when you want to elevate your summer look without too much effort.
2. Braids and Plaits: Sleek and Protective
Braiding your locs is another fantastic option for keeping them neat and tidy during the summer. Braids not only give your locs a break from manipulation but also protect them from the sun, wind, and moisture. Here are some ideas to try:
- Feed-In Braids: These braids are a great way to protect your locs while still having a stylish, edgy look. Feed-in braids work by gradually adding small amounts of hair as you braid, which helps to create a seamless, natural-looking style. They also help protect your locs from the elements while maintaining an elegant look.
- Box Braids Over Locs: If you’re in the mood for a fresh change, you can try overlaying box braids over your locs. This style works by braiding your locs with added synthetic hair, which shields your natural locs from the sun and excessive manipulation. Plus, they give off a cute, bohemian vibe!
- Cornrows: Cornrows are an excellent way to keep your locs neat and protected while minimizing exposure to the sun. You can experiment with different patterns—straight back, zigzag, or even intricate geometric designs. The best part? Cornrows are a low-maintenance option that’ll last for weeks with minimal upkeep.
3. Loc Scarves and Headwraps: Stylish Sun Protection
When you want to keep your locs protected from the sun without committing to a specific style, a headwrap or scarf is an easy and chic option. A colorful scarf or printed headwrap not only shields your hair from the sun but also adds a pop of color to your look.
- Turban Style: A turban-style headwrap offers maximum protection for your locs, especially on hot days. You can tie it in a way that covers the entire length of your locs, protecting them from UV rays while also adding an elegant, retro-inspired flair.
- Boho Chic Headband: A simple, wide headband can be a quick fix to keep your locs back and out of your face. It’s perfect for those days when you want something minimal but still stylish. This is a great option for running errands or hitting the beach.
- Silk or Satin Scarves: Not only do these materials protect your locs from the sun, but they also prevent your hair from drying out or becoming frizzy. Silk and satin are gentle on locs, reducing friction and helping to preserve your hair’s health and shine.
4. Loc Curls: Fresh and Flirty
For those who love a bit of volume and curl, there are a variety of methods to achieve loc curls without compromising the health of your hair. Curls can be a fantastic summer style that adds texture and flair to your locs while protecting them from the heat.
- Curling with Perm Rods: Curling your locs with perm rods creates a beautiful, defined curl pattern. This style is perfect for adding a little fun to your locs during the summer and is a great way to keep your hair off your face and neck while looking chic.
- Twist-Outs: A twist-out is a fabulous way to add some definition to your locs. By twisting sections of your locs and letting them set overnight, you’ll have a soft, voluminous look that lasts for days. It’s a great way to change things up without a permanent style.
- Flexi Rod Sets: Flexi rods are another option for creating curls that are bouncy, voluminous, and frizz-free. They offer flexibility and can be used on both short and long locs. Plus, they can be set overnight for effortless, beautiful curls the next day.
5. Protective Styles with Accessories: Add Some Flair
Sometimes, the simplest way to protect your locs is by incorporating accessories that keep your hair neat while adding a little extra style. Here are a few accessory ideas for the summer:
- Beads and Cuffs: Adding beads, cuffs, or charms to your locs can help keep them styled without compromising their health. These accessories can be strategically placed throughout your locs to add personality and a fun flair to your summer look.
- Loc Chains: Loc chains are a chic, trendy addition that not only protects your locs but also elevates your overall style. They’re perfect for summer music festivals, beach trips, or any occasion where you want to shine.
- Wooden or Metal Clips: For a minimalist, boho-inspired look, use wooden or metal clips to pin back sections of your locs. They provide a practical solution to keep hair in place while protecting it from the elements.
Embrace the Summer With Confidence
Summer doesn’t have to mean sacrificing the health of your locs. By incorporating protective styles that are both functional and fashionable, you can ensure that your locs remain safe from the heat, humidity, and UV damage. Whether you prefer updos, braids, or accessories, the key is to keep your hair protected while still embracing the spirit of the season.
So, grab your favorite headwrap, experiment with some new twists, and get ready to enjoy a summer full of stylish, protected locs. And don’t forget to follow along with my journey as I share my photos of these styles in action! 🌞💁🏽♀️
